Dorie Miller was the first African-American to receive the Navy Cross for valor. At Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, aboard the battleship West Virginia, the 22-year-old ship's mess worker ignored calls to abandon the burning ship and disobeyed the law that prohibited black servicemen from firing weapons. Amid a hail of bullets and bombs, he manned a deserted machine gun and helped knock up to six enemy planes out of the Hawaiian sky. Prior, he carried wounded sailors to safety and the ship's mortally wounded captain to a first aid station.
