This is an image of a statue representing U.S. Marines raising a flag atop Mount Suribachi on February 23, 1945 during the final stages of the Pacific War, Battle of Iwo Jima. The flag was raised by six Marines, three of whom were killed in action during the battle.
The invasion of Iwo Jima was part of its island hopping strategy to defeat Japan. The island was used by Japanese as an early warning station. After conquering the island, the US used it for an emergency landing strip for damaged bombers.
